Foreword

As the Executive Director of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the dynamism and resilience of the global film industry. At a time when unprecedented challenges and rapid technological advancements are reshaping the industry landscape, it is clear that our community is poised not just to adapt, but to lead.

AFCI’s recent workshop Amplifying Voices, Transforming Futures: Navigating Disruption in the Film Industry, held during AFCI Week in August 2024 in Los Angeles, showcased the collective vision and creativity of film commissioners and industry leaders as they tackled eight disruptive scenarios impacting our future.

From the rise of AI-driven virtual productions to the urgent need for carbon-neutral filmmaking, the workshop encouraged participants to strike a delicate balance between tradition and innovation. We explored the evolving role of film commissions in this rapidly changing environment, embracing technology while preserving the identity of the regions we represent.

The discussions were forward-thinking and bold, addressing how commissioners can future-proof their regions through modernization, while simultaneously ensuring that our industry remains inclusive and resilient.

One of the most profound takeaways was the commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices. Our participants recognized the power of storytelling as a force for inclusivity and cultural understanding. By supporting marginalized communities and investing in diversity-focused initiatives, we are not only fostering creativity but reshaping the industry to reflect the richness of its audiences.

Environmental sustainability emerged as another key focus. The call to action was clear: we must take responsibility for the industry’s environmental footprint. Through investments in green infrastructure, the adoption of eco-friendly policies, and partnerships that prioritize sustainability, film commissions will lead the way toward a more responsible future.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of collaboration, particularly in times of crisis. Global partnerships, crisis management strategies, and political advocacy were emphasized as essential tools to ensure the continuity and growth of the film industry. By engaging policymakers and demonstrating the cultural and economic value of film, we can secure vital support for our industry’s future.

This workshop was not just an exchange of ideas but a blueprint for what is possible. The film industry is at a crossroads, and it is through innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability that we will shape its future. AFCI and our members are uniquely positioned to guide this transformation, ensuring that our industry thrives while staying true to its creative core.

The journey ahead is both challenging and exciting, and I am confident that with the strategies and vision developed in this workshop (which you can read about in more detail in this publication), the next decade will be one of the most transformative periods in the history of film.

Sincerely,
Jaclyn Philpott
