Measuring and Communicating the Economic Impact of Film and Television Production

Date and Time: Wednesday October 7th at 8:30 Pacific Time
Location: Online
Session duration: 1hr 15mins – includes Q&A

Led by Olsberg•SPI Managing Director Leon Forde

It is essential that film commissions be able to report accurately on production activity to government stakeholders, and, where appropriate (and with production’s consent), to the wider public. The more data that can be shared regarding spend by sector, employment (locals/non-locals and foreigners) and other activity the better a film commission can convey the economic and other benefits of the sector.

This critical workshop will focus on:
understanding the economic impact of screen production
– ensuring adequate data collection and data quality, and
– maximizing messaging and communications to public and private stakeholders

Leon is an Associate Director of Olsberg•SPI having joined the firm in 2013 after 15 years as a senior journalist and contributing editor for Screen International. In 2017 he delivered The State of the UK Independent Film Sector, a major analysis of all cyclical and structural changes to have occurred in the independent film business, and how the shifting landscape is affecting conditions. This independent study was undertaken for UK producers’ body Pact.

Leon’s work for Olsberg•SPI spans a wide range of international strategy, business planning, feasibility and insight projects. Recently, these have included projects related to the development of production facilities, the establishment of new national automatic production incentives, the development of film commissions, and national and regional screen tourism strategy.

Leon has spoken about the film business on the BBC and CNN and at international festivals and conferences, and has also contributed to a wide range of media outlets in the UK and overseas. He is a voting member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

A certificate of completion will be presented to those participants who are present for the duration of the session.
